The Background of the Foundation
The Sam Nujoma Foundation that is currently operating under the mandate of the Founding President's Office is a non-profit organisation which was established in 2005. It was officially launched on 18 February 2005. The Foundation is managed by a seven member Board of Trustees, assisted by a three member ad-hoc Management Committee.
It is governed by a Deed of Trust with the objectives of pursuing self-reliance and capacity building for the benefit of all Namibians, irrespective of race, religion, gender, creed or ethnic origin.
The Foundation is the primary vehicle for the Founding President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr. Nujoma's continued pursuit of the ideals and goals he set while serving as Founding President. It is anchored on the principles of peace, security, stability, democracy and development. The Foundation work is intended to capture the vision and values of Dr. Sam Nujoma's life and work in order to continue to develop a peaceful, stable and democratic Namibia.
The Foundation aims to provide financial assistance to Namibian students studying Science and Technology. It also addresses the plight of vulnerable children in Namibia by providing care for the abandoned, orphaned and HIV/Aids infected children.
The Foundation seeks to enhance the activities of the National Endowment Fund, which was launched by Dr. Sam Nujoma on 23 September 1994. The National Endowment Fund was established to foster the promotion of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Namibia. Its aim is to enable as many deserving students as possible to study at tertiary institutions in Namibia and abroad.
The name of the Fund was later changed to the Sam Nujoma National Endowment Fund on 18 September 2002 and was launched together with the Foundation in 2005. This Fund is a wing of the Foundation which is responsible for the financial assistance of students in the form of study grants, loans and bursaries to deserving Namibian school going learners and students.
In addition, the Sam Nujoma Foundation considers a range of other social responsibilities that relate to the work of the Founding President during his term of office. These include the facilitation and organization of seminars, conferences, lectures, workshops and particularly those that promote mathematics, science, technology, and medical research. In pursuit of its goals, the Foundation intends to house libraries and archives where scholars and students can conduct research into the history of the Namibian people's struggle for national liberation and independence.
The immediate goal of the Foundation is to identify and work in programming areas where Dr. Nujoma can provide leadership and initiative. This will ensure that the Founder's ideals remain of benefit to present and future generations of Namibia. Through the work of the Foundation the Namibian people and the international world will continue to benefit from the political acumen and guidance of Dr. Nujoma in the public management of Namibia. |
